Apocalyptic video games gained popularity in the 1990's with the creation of Doom - a first-person shooter game.  Doom requires the player to fight off demons which were released from hell.  The character  in Doom is a marine who did not follow orders and is sent to an alien outpost where he must fight off the monsters and says "Vengeance is mine, because vigilantism is redemptive."

 

       Many of the video games on the market use the post apocalyptic theme where the characters must battle the monsters that have taken over earth in order for humans to find redemption and survive.
